I'm confident in my ability to program this device, though. I have fairly extensive C++ experience but haven't used it in a long time. I think the easiest way to control the device would be to connect it to a smartphone or laptop through a captive WiFi connection, but I am open to other suggestions.
#SPEECH TIMER MANUAL#
I would like to replace this manual function with a machine that would look something like a stoplight but would automatically time the speeches and light up the green, yellow, and red lights automatically as needed. The speaker is notified when he has reached the minimum time with a green card, then shown a yellow card upon reaching the midpoint between the minimum and maximum times, and finally shown a red card upon reaching the maximum time limit for the speech. The speeches range in length from 1-2 minutes to upwards of 20 minutes, but the common thread is that there is a defined minimum time and maximum time. People give speeches and have them timed and evaluated. I am the president of my local Toastmasters club. I will be recording the times for speeches, Table Topics,Īnd Speech Evaluations and providing a Timer report at the end of the meeting.Hey, I'm new at this (this is my first post, but I did have the common decency to Google and make sure there wasn't already something out there on this) and want to see if a project I'm thinking of tackling is even feasible for someone with no experience. Describe Your Role My name is _ and I will be your Timer for today. The Timer benefits by practicing the following skills: meeting preparation, explaining role functions, tracking and recording details during meetings, and being ready to speak at the right time. In addition, the Timer helps speakers and Speech Evaluators to be cognizant of the time elapsed. Timing benefits the group by helping to ensure speeches and Speech Evaluations stay within prescribed limits so the structure of the meeting can be maintained. Alternately, you may opt to change your virtual background to reflect the stoplight colors. When you hold them up to your webcam, say the color that corresponds to the time. The official Toastmasters International app also includes a timer feature and is available in the AppStore for Apple or Google Play for Android.įor online meetings, find objects such as folders to hold up for green, yellow, and red. A stopwatch is usually available, although most smart phones include a stopwatch feature. During the Meetingįor in-person meetings, a battery-powered stoplight timer is used. A sample is included in this document but is also available here on our website. Before the MeetingĮnsure you have a copy of the Timer’s form.

You will also be called upon to report the recorded speaking times at the end of the meeting. The Toastmaster will call on people to explain their roles (see the “Describe Your Role” section). However, in some programs - especially those operating on a tight schedule - a long-winded speaker may receive applause (started by the timer) after a certain overage of time. Depending on the meeting format, speakers may be allowed to speak until they finish. In addition, the timer helps to keep the meeting running smoothly. They are perfect for everyday activities such as cooking meals, taking quizzes, giving speeches, playing sports, or practicing music. The Timer’s role is important because it enables speakers to learn to speak within a specific timeframe. Create your timers with optional alarms and start/pause/stop them simultaneously or sequentially. In addition, the Timer is sometimes asked to time 1 minute between speeches to allow time for member feedback and for voting for the best speaker, Table Topics speaker, and best Speech Evaluator.
